Baby Carriers

Wearing our three sons has given us the practical expertise to help you choose and use your baby carrier. At Fox Den Lane, we offer the same styles and brands of baby carriers we use ourselves. We started babywearing when our first son was born in 2003. We carried him around because it was fun, and it made sense. It was a sure-fire way to get him to sleep! It met his need for physical contact, movement, security, and stimulation.

Our personal collection and shop offerings have grown together to fit every babywearing purpose and lifestyle need as we have encountered them. We have a baby carrier for just about everything, from gardening and biking to nursing and hiking (and sometimes two at once). We have baby carriers beautiful enough for formal occasions and sturdy enough to withstand daily use through multiple children.

For parents who look beyond the few baby carriers that are widely available, they are rewarded, but often overwhelmed, with the myriad of choices in a baby carrier. To help you on your search for the best for your baby, let us define the types of baby carriers. In each of these categories, we have found high-quality, stylish baby carriers designed with a special baby in mind, made with love, and available to you.

Types of Baby Carriers

There are five main categories\types of baby carriers.

Baby Sling Carriers

Probably the most recognizable style of baby carriers is the traditional Baby Sling. A ring baby sling is a length of cloth which, when threaded through the rings and worn across one shoulder to the opposite side or hip, creates a pocket in which to carry a baby in various ways on the front, hip, or even on the back. A baby may be worn in a ring sling from birth, and breastfeeding a newborn in a baby sling is especially convenient. Because only minimal adjustment is necessary to get a baby in and out of the sling, baby slings are ideal for the intermittent wearing of mobile babies who still want to be held often but also enjoy practicing their new mobility. A ring sling which can be easily switched from one shoulder to the other is best when carrying a heavy baby or toddler, so that neither side is being strained over time. A baby pouch is typically not adjustable, but custom fitted pouches are often stylish and have a sleek look.

Baby Wrap Carriers

Wraparound baby carriers, or baby wraps, are lengths of woven or stretch cloth, which wrap around the baby and parent, then tie. It is thought that baby wraps offer maximum comfort with maximum versatility. Depending on the length of the wrap, a baby can be positioned in many different ways, usually with the baby's weight distributed over both shoulders and the torso of the wearer.

Mei Tai and Asian Baby Carriers

Mei Tais and Podaegis are also known as ABC's or Asian Baby Carriers. The main difference between Mei Tai baby carriers and Podaegi Baby Carriers is that Podaegis have two straps were as Mei Tais have four straps. The extra two straps on the Mei Tai makes it easier to tie and therefore a bit more popular. Both the Mei Tai and Podaegi are extremely comfortable and make wearing your baby for hours very easy to manage. Both make getting a baby on your back a simpler task.

Backpack (Soft Structured) Baby Carriers

Baby backpacks, which usually function as front-pack baby carriers as well are popular carriers on the market, and are the baby carrier of choice for most dads. The well-designed pack-style carriers can be used with toddlers as well. Baby front or backpack carriers have the same general shape and function as the Mei Tai and some other ABC's but with more padding and snaps or buckles. Many baby backpack carriers are made with an external frame, but frameless carriers are more common because the baby is pulled in closer to your center of gravity, so there is no need for your lower back to try to make corrections with every wobble of the rider. One important reason that frameless baby backpacks and designer baby carriers are so popular is because you are given the choice whether you want to wear your baby on the front or back. The Patapum Baby Carrier is a good example of a baby backpack carrier.

Mei Hip Baby Carriers

The newest baby carrier is the Mei Hip. The Mei Hip is a mix between a sling and a Mei Tai\Podaegi. The difference is that the Mei Hip carriers allow the baby to rest comfortably on your hip. Like a sling the Mei Hip rests on one shoulder, but like the Mei Tai or Podaegi it is strapped securely around your hips, which distributes baby's weight evenly.
